Vaal Harbourtown

Co-Arc International Architects were responsible for the urban design of Harbourtown. Developed by one of Gauteng’s ‘Blue Chip’ developers and situated on the most picturesque area of the Vaal Dam, Harbourtown is a secure marina residential estate that offers owners the true harbour feel of a waterfront which follows strict architectural guidelines developed by Co-Arc.
The estate comprises 230 residential erven or stands, 6 recreational and or park areas (including a “Chip and Putt” – one of South Africa’s best PAR3 golf course), 2 waterfront and dam areas, a site for the Club House and its facilities, 91 purpose built boat garages and harbour-masters full valet facilities. All of these areas form part a secure gated community with 4km’s of paved recreation paths.
The residential design concept focused on creating a harmonious, aesthetically pleasing environment characterised by flat grassland and wide open spaces. By controlling the form and materials of the residences Co-Arc were able to ensure that the development would consist of a number of compatible, yet individual designs. Specific controls were introduced to ensure that the architecture would have as little impact on view as possible by emphasising linear, horizontal quality and introducing open plan living areas, flowing into outdoor spaces. Through allowing a certain level of flexibility in the architectural guidelines, monotonous, clinical uniformity can be avoided, whilst the potential for richness and variety still exists. As a consequence of the carefully considered controls the development has achieved unity and variety simultaneously. Co-Arc were appointed as architects for the gate house, club house and numerous houses.
