The Everard Read Gallery is internationally unique as a custom designed commercial gallery. The clients brief required an existing house and trees to be retained and integrated in the design, while the gallery was to provide a series of naturally lit exhibition rooms.

The renovated house forms the physical and conceptual anchor in the design, accommodating the library and administrative offices, with the reception area linking old and new The new galleries are designed as a sequence of indoor and outdoor rooms increasing in scale as they step down the slope of the site. Natural light is directed onto the works of art by means of a series of clerestory vaults, oriented east-west for optimum lighting.

While the white interior forms a subtle backdrop to the displayed art works, bold colours contribute to a distinctive external image. A colonnade defines the street edge and entrance approach, while the inside line of this walkway is articulated by a curvilinear enclosing wall which acts as an acoustic screen to the street.
